Marking Time In Quarantine Community Day

Explore History at Q Station: A Free Heritage Tour

Are you ready to step back in time and uncover the rich history of Australia’s Quarantine Station?

Mark your calendar for Sunday 8th September, when Q Station will host a special free tour as part of its Commonwealth Heritage Grant conservation project, aimed at reviving the sandstone inscriptions in the Wharf Precinct.

For countless immigrants, the Quarantine Station was not just a destination but a significant milestone. It represented the culmination of a long journey and the commencement of a new life in Australia. For many, it was the first place their feet touched Australian soil, a moment filled with hope and anticipation. However, for others, the experience of quarantine was bittersweet. It was a tumultuous mix of joy at finally returning home and anxiety over the uncertainty of the situation awaiting them. Today, we honour and remember these diverse experiences through historical evidence – from the inscriptions etched into the sandstone to photographs capturing heartfelt reunions and monuments scattered across the landscape. Each mark tells a story; each carving encapsulates a moment that connects us to our past.

In celebration of NSW Heritage Council’s History Week, Q Station is thrilled to offer 2 captivating 2-hour guided tours, named “Marking Time in Quarantine.” This tour invites visitors to explore the site while delving deep into its history, revealing how those who experienced quarantine left their indelible mark on this significant location. What inscriptions resonate with you? Join us from 10:30am – 12:00pm on the 8th September to share your thoughts with our Interpretation Officer and learn more about this vital project. Your input could help preserve these historical treasures for future generations.

But that’s not all! From 1:00pm – 3:00pm, we invite you to take a sneak peek inside the Quarantine Station’s Moveable Heritage Collection Store. This is a wonderful chance to explore items that contribute to the rich tapestry of our shared history. And the best part? There’s no need to book in advance for either event!

So, why not seize this unique opportunity to connect with Australia’s history and contribute to the conservation of a site that continues to share powerful stories? We can’t wait to see you at Q Station on the 8th September!
